Trading on Bybit? Every trade can be a taxable event. A crypto-tax tool like Koinly auto-imports your history and generates a compliant tax report. Disclosed affiliate link — we only point to tools we'd actually use.
Security
- 2FA (TOTP/hardware key)
- cold storage
- proof-of-reserves (Merkle tree), independently verified by Hacken with 30+ consecutive reports
- Feb 2025 hack: ~$1.5B stolen (largest crypto theft on record, attributed to the Lazarus Group via a compromised signing interface); Bybit fully reimbursed users within days
Regulation & track record
Bybit EU GmbH holds a MiCA (CASP) licence from Austria's FMA (authorised May 2025), passportable across the EEA via the separate bybit.eu platform; EEA users were moved off the global platform by 1 July 2026. Also licensed under Dubai's VARA framework. Returned to the UK in December 2025 through Archax, an FCA-authorised firm that approves its promotions — Bybit itself holds no FCA authorisation, so UK holdings have no FSCS cover. Not available to US users.
Who should NOT use Bybit
- You're a US-based user — this exchange is not available in the US.
- You're a complete beginner — its derivatives focus suits more experienced traders.
Not trading today?
Whatever exchange you pick, two things matter more than its fees.
Coins you aren't trading are safer in a hardware wallet whose keys only you hold, and every trade can be a taxable event that you'll need to report. These are the two tools we point readers to.
