Since 1 July 2026, only crypto firms authorised under MiCA may serve customers in the EU. The authorisation belongs to a specific company, not to the brand, so the useful question is: which entity am I signing up with, and is that entity on the register? We read ESMA's interim MiCA register directly, in its version updated on 7 October 2026. Binance and Bitget do not appear. Everything below can be checked in the same public file.

The short answer

OKX, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, KuCoin, Bitpanda, Bitstamp, Crypto.com, Gemini, Bitvavo, Revolut, eToro and Trade Republic each have an EU entity authorised under MiCA and notified to serve customers in France and Germany, among others. Four French firms, Coinhouse, Deskoin, Paymium and Meria, were authorised by the AMF between April and June 2026. Binance and Bitget have no entity on the register. Before you deposit, check that the company named in the terms you accept is the one listed below.

Authorisation dates are those in ESMA's file. The service letters are explained in the next section.

What the service letters mean

MiCA lists ten crypto-asset services. An entity is authorised only for the letters next to its name.

  • a: custody and administration of crypto-assets for clients
  • b: operation of a crypto-asset trading platform
  • c: exchange of crypto-assets for money (euros, etc.)
  • d: exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets
  • e: execution of orders for clients
  • f: placing of crypto-assets
  • g: reception and transmission of orders
  • h: advice on crypto-assets
  • i: portfolio management
  • j: transfer services for clients

Three things the register does not tell you

Derivatives are not MiCA. Crypto futures and perpetuals are financial instruments under separate EU rules (MiFID II). A MiCA authorisation covers crypto services such as custody and spot exchange; it does not on its own authorise leveraged products.

The brand is not the contract. Large exchanges run several companies around the world. If you sign up through a global website, check which entity is named in the terms of service and that it matches the register.

A licence is not a safety rating. MiCA brings capital, custody and conduct rules and a supervisor you can complain to. It does not guarantee fees, uptime or protection from hacks. Our rankings score those separately.

How to check any exchange yourself

The register is public and free. Checking takes about five minutes.

  • Open ESMA's MiCA page (typed yourself) and download the interim register file for crypto-asset service providers
  • Search for the brand and the legal entity name from the exchange's terms of service
  • Check the home regulator, the authorisation date and the service letters
  • Check that your country appears in the list of countries the entity is notified to serve
  • If the brand is missing, it is not authorised in the EU, whatever its website says

Quick answers

Is Binance licensed under MiCA?

No. No Binance entity appears in ESMA's interim MiCA register (file updated 7 October 2026). Binance withdrew its MiCA application in Greece on 24 June 2026, and since 1 July 2026 EU residents can no longer sign up or trade there.

Does MiCA protect my deposits like a bank guarantee?

No. MiCA requires segregation and safekeeping of client assets and gives you a regulator to complain to, but there is no deposit guarantee scheme for crypto.

Which regulator supervises OKX and Coinbase in the EU?

OKX Europe Limited is authorised by the Malta Financial Services Authority; Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. by Luxembourg's CSSF. Both are notified to serve customers across the EU, including France and Germany.

Not financial, tax or legal advice. Educational information only; crypto is high-risk and you can lose all of your money.
