How to Buy Bitcoin (Safely) — A Beginner's Guide
Buying Bitcoin takes about ten minutes. Doing it safely — so you actually keep it — takes a few extra steps most guides skip. Here's the honest version.
1. Choose a reputable exchange
Pick an exchange that publishes proof-of-reserves and is regulated in your region. Fees matter, but security and regulation matter more for your first purchase. See our ranked comparison for the current picks.
2. Create and verify your account
You'll complete KYC (identity verification) on any compliant exchange — this is normal and protects you. Enable two-factor authentication with an app or hardware key, never SMS alone.
3. Fund your account
Bank transfer is usually the cheapest way to deposit; card is faster but costs more. Watch for spread and conversion fees, which are often larger than the headline trading fee.
4. Buy — and mind the fees
Use a 'limit' order rather than an instant 'buy' where possible; the convenience 'buy' button often carries a higher spread. Start small while you learn the interface.
5. Move it to a wallet you control (for larger amounts)
Crypto left on an exchange is exposed to that exchange's risk. For anything you're holding long term, withdraw to a hardware wallet where you control the keys.
